Respite Foster Real Stories & Information

Respite fostering offers children a safe, loving place to stay for short periods — often weekends or school holidays. It gives full-time foster carers a chance to rest and recharge, while children enjoy a change of scenery, new experiences, and the comfort of another caring adult. Even within a short time, respite carers can make a lasting impact.

The value of short breaks

Offering short breaks isn’t just about giving carers a rest. It helps children build a whole team around them — trusted adults who understand them and want the best for them. A change of environment can be refreshing and exciting, helping children build resilience and confidence. Respite carers are matched carefully and often become a consistent figure in a child’s life.

Respite care works best when it is predictable and child-centred — keeping familiar routines, planning enjoyable activities, and making sure children feel welcomed and safe. It can also be a gentle way to step into fostering if you’re exploring what fits your lifestyle.

Real story

“I was asked if I would care for K every month for a weekend. I was initially worried she wouldn’t want to stay, or that she would feel punished. Her foster carer brought her to our home before the first weekend so she could see the bedroom and choose what she wanted for dinner. Now I look forward to our weekends. We go horse-riding and she loves to play chess. I’ve become good friends with her foster carer — we both want the best for her, and I feel like I am her extended family.”
